 The Cross Against the Political Economy of Endless Conflict

Endless conflict does not sustain itself by accident. It is maintained by systems—economic, political, and informational—that convert instability into advantage. In such systems, war is not only fought; it is financed, narrated, and normalized. The result is a political economy in which conflict becomes productive, circulation replaces resolution, and the incentives for continuation outweigh the incentives for peace.

This condition distorts public reason. Policy can be framed to manage conflict rather than end it. Markets can absorb disruption as opportunity. Narratives can render prolonged instability as necessary, inevitable, or even beneficial. Over time, the horizon of peace narrows, and the expectation of conclusion diminishes.

The costs are borne unevenly. Those with the least capacity to absorb disruption carry the greatest burden—displacement, precarity, and the erosion of basic security. Meanwhile, the mechanisms that sustain conflict often remain insulated from these consequences. This asymmetry is not incidental; it is structural.

Against this, the cross establishes a contrary measure.

It does not evaluate systems by their efficiency in managing conflict, but by their capacity to preserve the dignity of the person. It does not accept the conversion of human vulnerability into strategic advantage. It rejects the normalization of harm as a condition of order.

The cross also exposes a deeper problem: the alignment of will with systems that benefit from continuation. When participation—through attention, consumption, or unexamined agreement—feeds the conditions of conflict, responsibility is diffused but not eliminated. The issue is not only what systems do, but how they are sustained.

The corrective is not a single policy instrument. It is a reorientation of ends.

Peace must be treated as an objective rather than a byproduct. Accountability must extend to the structures that profit from instability. Public reasoning must be disciplined by truth rather than driven by expediency. Economic activity must be evaluated by its effects on human life, not solely by its returns.

This reorientation requires limits—on what can be justified, on what can be normalized, and on what can be sustained in the name of necessity.

Without such limits, conflict will continue to be organized as a durable feature of the system.

With them, the possibility of interruption returns.

The cross stands as a fixed point against which these limits can be measured. It refuses the logic that treats persons as means. It calls for the alignment of power with responsibility, and of action with justice.

Where this alignment is absent, critique is warranted. Where it is resisted, change becomes necessary.

The central claim is straightforward: a system that depends on the continuation of conflict cannot deliver a just peace. Only a system that is willing to end what benefits it can begin to secure what is right.

끝없는 갈등은 우연히 발생하는 것이 아닙니다. 불안정을 이점으로 바꾸는 경제적, 정치적, 정보적 시스템에 의해 유지됩니다. 이러한 시스템에서 전쟁은 단순히 벌어지는 것이 아니라 자금이 지원되고, 담론화되고, 정상화됩니다. 그 결과, 갈등이 생산적인 것이 되고, 해결 대신 순환이 우선시되며, 평화를 위한 유인보다 지속을 위한 유인이 더 커지는 정치경제가 형성됩니다.

이러한 상황은 공공의 이성을 왜곡합니다. 정책은 갈등을 종식시키는 것이 아니라 관리하는 방향으로 수립될 수 있습니다. 시장은 혼란을 기회로 받아들일 수 있습니다. 담론은 장기적인 불안정을 필요하고, 불가피하며, 심지어 유익한 것으로 만들 수 있습니다. 시간이 흐르면서 평화의 지평은 좁아지고, 종결에 대한 기대는 줄어듭니다.

그 대가는 불균등하게 분담됩니다. 혼란을 감당할 능력이 가장 부족한 사람들이 가장 큰 부담을 지게 됩니다. 이주, 불안정한 삶, 그리고 기본적인 안보의 침식이 그 예입니다. 한편, 갈등을 지속시키는 메커니즘은 이러한 결과로부터 종종 보호받습니다. 이러한 비대칭성은 우연이 아니라 구조적인 것입니다.

이에 맞서 십자가는 정반대의 기준을 제시합니다.

십자가는 갈등 관리의 효율성이 아니라 인간 존엄성을 보존하는 능력으로 체제를 평가합니다. 인간의 취약성을 전략적 이점으로 전환하는 것을 용납하지 않으며, 질서 유지의 조건으로서 해악을 정상화하는 것을 거부합니다.

십자가는 또한 더 근본적인 문제, 즉 존속을 통해 이익을 얻는 체제에 의지하는 사람들의 행태를 드러냅니다. 관심, 소비, 혹은 묵인된 동의와 같은 참여가 갈등의 조건을 부추길 때, 책임은 분산될 뿐 완전히 사라지지는 않습니다. 문제는 체제가 무엇을 하는지뿐 아니라 어떻게 유지되는가입니다.

해결책은 단 하나의 정책 수단이 아니라 목적의 재정립입니다.

평화는 부산물이 아니라 목표로 여겨져야 합니다. 책임은 불안정을 통해 이익을 얻는 구조까지 확대되어야 합니다. 공공의 이성은 편의가 아닌 진실에 의해 규율되어야 합니다. 경제 활동은 단순히 수익만이 아니라 인간의 삶에 미치는 영향으로 평가되어야 합니다.

이러한 재정립에는 한계가 필요합니다. 정당화될 수 있는 것, 정상화될 수 있는 것, 그리고 필요라는 이름으로 지속될 수 있는 것에 대한 한계 말입니다.

이러한 한계가 없다면 갈등은 시스템의 고질적인 특징으로 계속해서 조직화될 것입니다.

반면, 이러한 한계가 있을 때 비로소 갈등을 중단할 가능성이 다시 생겨납니다.

십자가는 이러한 한계들을 가늠해 볼 수 있는 확고한 기준점으로 우뚝 서 있습니다. 십자가는 인간을 단지 수단으로만 취급하는 논리를 단호히 거부합니다. 또한 권력에는 책임을, 행동에는 정의가 따르도록 그 조화를 촉구합니다.

이러한 조화가 결여된 곳에서는 비판이 마땅합니다. 그리고 이러한 조화가 거부당하는 곳에서는 변화가 필수적입니다.

핵심 주장은 명료합니다. 갈등의 지속에 의존하는 체제는 결코 정의로운 평화를 실현할 수 없다는 것입니다. 오직 자신에게 이득이 되는 것일지라도 이를 기꺼이 내려놓을 용의가 있는 체제만이 비로소 올바른 가치를 지켜내기 위한 첫걸음을 내디딜 수 있습니다.
