 WHEN THE PEOPLE BECOME THE BATTLEFIELD

(A Biblical Warning on the Corruption of Human Desire)

There is a point at which war ceases to be something that happens between parties and becomes something that happens within persons. When that point is reached, the people themselves become the battlefield.

This condition is not marked first by visible violence, but by the corruption of desire. What we long for, what we fear, and what we are willing to accept begin to shift. Desire, once oriented toward what is good, becomes susceptible to distortion. It can be stirred, redirected, and intensified until it no longer seeks truth, but affirmation; no longer seeks justice, but advantage.

Scripture consistently warns that the deepest conflicts arise not only from external pressures but from within. Disordered desire gives rise to division, hostility, and ultimately harm. When desire is no longer governed by truth and conscience, it becomes a force that can be mobilized, often without awareness, toward ends that undermine both the individual and the community.

In such a state, the line between participant and victim becomes unclear. People are not only affected by conflict; they are shaped by it. Repeated exposure to distorted narratives and heightened emotion can normalize reactions that would otherwise be questioned. Over time, what once seemed extreme becomes acceptable, and what once seemed necessary to resist is no longer recognized.

This is how the battlefield expands.

It is not merely that conflict reaches the people, but that it takes form within them—within perception, judgment, and response. The struggle then is no longer only over territory or policy, but over the direction of the human will.

The consequence is profound. When desire is corrupted, actions follow. When actions align with distorted desire, systems are reinforced. Thus, the cycle continues, not only through institutions but through the ordinary decisions of individuals.

The biblical warning is clear: guard the heart, for from it flow the issues of life. The integrity of the person is not a private matter; it has public consequence. When the heart is disordered, the world reflects that disorder.

The response, therefore, must begin at the level of desire. It requires the reordering of what we seek, what we value, and what we are willing to affirm. Without such reordering, efforts to address conflict externally will remain incomplete.

This is not a call to withdrawal, but to vigilance. Not a rejection of engagement, but a discipline of discernment. It is a recognition that the health of the community depends upon the integrity of its members.

When the people become the battlefield, the preservation of peace requires more than strategy. It requires the restoration of rightly ordered desire—aligned with truth, guided by conscience, and directed toward the good of others.

Only then can the expansion of conflict be restrained, and the possibility of genuine peace be sustained.

(인간 욕망의 타락에 관한 성경적 경고)

전쟁이 당사자들 사이에서 벌어지는 사건이기를 멈추고, 사람들의 내면에서 벌어지는 사건이 되는 지점이 있습니다. 그 지점에 이르면, 사람들 그 자체가 전장이 되어버립니다.

이러한 상태는 가시적인 폭력으로 먼저 나타나는 것이 아니라, 욕망의 타락으로 시작됩니다. 우리가 갈망하는 것, 우리가 두려워하는 것, 그리고 우리가 기꺼이 받아들이려는 것들이 변질되기 시작합니다. 한때 선한 것을 향해 있던 욕망은 왜곡되기 쉬운 상태가 됩니다. 욕망은 자극받고, 방향이 틀어지고, 증폭되어 마침내 진리가 아닌 인정을 추구하고, 정의가 아닌 이득만을 좇게 될 수 있습니다.

성경은 가장 깊은 갈등이 단지 외부의 압력에서 비롯되는 것이 아니라, 바로 우리 내면에서 발생한다고 일관되게 경고합니다. 무질서한 욕망은 분열과 적대감, 그리고 궁극적으로 해악을 낳습니다. 욕망이 더 이상 진리와 양심의 통제를 받지 않게 될 때, 그것은 종종 본인조차 의식하지 못하는 사이에 개인과 공동체 모두를 파괴하는 목적을 향해 동원될 수 있는 강력한 힘이 됩니다.

그러한 상태에서는 참여자와 희생자 사이의 경계가 모호해집니다. 사람들은 갈등의 영향을 받을 뿐만 아니라, 갈등에 의해 그 존재 자체가 형성되어 갑니다. 왜곡된 서사와 격앙된 감정에 반복적으로 노출되다 보면, 평소 같았으면 의문을 제기했을 법한 반응들이 지극히 정상적인 것으로 받아들여지게 됩니다. 시간이 흐르면서 한때는 극단적으로 보였던 것이 용인되고, 한때는 반드시 맞서 싸워야 한다고 여겨졌던 것들이 더 이상 문제로 인식되지 않게 됩니다.

이것이 바로 전장이 확장되는 방식입니다.

갈등이 단지 사람들에게까지 미친다는 차원을 넘어, 사람들의 내면—즉 그들의 지각과 판단, 그리고 반응 방식—속에서 구체적인 형체를 갖추게 된다는 뜻입니다. 그리하여 투쟁의 대상은 더 이상 영토나 정책에 국한되지 않고, 인간 의지의 방향을 둘러싼 싸움으로 변모하게 됩니다.

그 결과는 지극히 중대합니다. 욕망이 타락하면, 그에 따른 행동이 뒤따릅니다. 행동이 왜곡된 욕망과 일치하게 되면, 그러한 체제는 더욱 강화됩니다. 이렇듯 악순환은 제도적인 차원을 넘어, 개개인의 일상적인 결정들을 통해서도 끊임없이 이어집니다.

성경의 경고는 분명합니다. 마음을 지키라, 생명의 근원이 거기서 나오기 때문이다. 한 인간의 온전함은 결코 사적인 문제에 머물지 않으며, 공적인 차원의 중대한 결과를 초래합니다. 마음이 무질서해지면, 세상 또한 그 무질서함을 그대로 반영하게 됩니다.

그러므로 이에 대한 대응은 바로 욕망의 차원에서부터 시작되어야 합니다. 우리가 무엇을 추구하고, 무엇에 가치를 두며, 무엇을 기꺼이 긍정할 것인지에 대한 근본적인 재정립이 요구되는 것입니다. 그러한 재정비가 없다면, 갈등을 외부적으로 해결하려는 노력은 미완으로 남을 것입니다.

이는 철수를 촉구하는 것이 아니라, 경계를 늦추지 말라는 요청입니다. 관여를 거부하는 것이 아니라, 분별력을 기르는 훈련을 하라는 것입니다. 이는 공동체의 건전성이 그 구성원들의 온전함에 달려 있음을 인식하는 일입니다.

사람들이 곧 갈등의 전장이 되어버릴 때, 평화를 지켜내기 위해서는 단순한 전략 이상의 것이 필요합니다. 진리에 부합하고, 양심의 인도를 받으며, 타인의 유익을 향해 나아가는—올바르게 정돈된 욕망의 회복이 필요합니다.

오직 그때에야 비로소 갈등의 확산을 억제하고, 진정한 평화의 가능성을 지속해 나갈 수 있을 것입니다.
