A city does not only remember in monuments.
It remembers in its streets.

It remembers in who is welcomed—
and who is left outside.

History is not silent.
It speaks through patterns that repeat,
through lives that remain exposed,
through the persistence of displacement
long after the crisis has passed.

The witness of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake is not confined to the past.
It is a disclosure—a revealing—
that what was once visible in catastrophe
is still present in quieter forms.

Then, the city was shaken suddenly.
Now, it is shaken slowly.

Then, thousands were left without shelter overnight.
Now, many remain without shelter indefinitely.

The difference is not in the reality of displacement,
but in how it is seen.

What was once undeniable
has become manageable.
What was once urgent
has become normalized.

But normalization does not erase truth.
It conceals it.

Urban homelessness is not only a social condition—
it is a form of historical disclosure.

It reveals that the question left by catastrophe
has not yet been answered.

Who belongs?
Who is protected?
Who is remembered?

And more deeply:

What does a city choose to carry forward—
and what does it quietly leave behind?

The burden of civic continuity is not merely to preserve infrastructure,
but to carry forward the moral knowledge gained in moments of exposure.

To remember rightly
is not to commemorate alone,
but to act.

For memory that does not transform
becomes a form of forgetting.

Theologically, this burden is not abstract.

It is encountered in the neighbor—
not as idea,
but as presence.

The one without shelter,
standing within the city’s reach,
embodies the unfinished work of history.

They are not outside the story.
They are the place where the story continues.

If the city is to remain continuous with its own truth,
it must respond where that truth is most clearly revealed.

Not in declarations alone,
but in proximity.

Not in remembrance alone,
but in restoration.

For the measure of continuity
is not whether the city endures,

but whether it remembers
what it has already been shown—

and chooses, at last,
to live accordingly.

더욱 조용한 형태로 여전히 존재한다는 것을 말입니다.

누가 속하는가?

누가 보호받는가?

누가 기억되는가?

더 나아가,

도시는 무엇을 계승하고,

무엇을 조용히 뒤에 남겨두는가?

시민적 연속성의 책임은 단순히 기반 시설을 보존하는 데 그치는 것이 아니라,

고난의 순간에서 얻은 도덕적 지식을 계승하는 것입니다.

올바르게 기억한다는 것은

단순히 기념하는 것이 아니라,

행동하는 것입니다.

변화하지 않는 기억은

망각의 한 형태가 되기 때문입니다.

신학적으로, 이 책임은 추상적인 것이 아닙니다.

그것은 이웃 안에서 마주하게 됩니다.

관념으로서가 아니라,

현존으로서 말입니다.

도시의 손길이 닿는 곳에 서 있는, 집 없는 자는,

역사의 미완성된 과업을 상징합니다.

그들은 이야기의 바깥에 있는 것이 아닙니다.

그들은 이야기가 계속되는 곳입니다.

도시가 자신의 진실과 연속성을 유지하려면,

그 진실이 가장 명확하게 드러나는 곳에서 응답해야 합니다.
